Bassa Mask - Liberia

Bearing the deeply indented profile so classic in Bassa masks, this superbly carved piece shows finely executed facial features, prominent cheekbones, and a jutting forehead surmounted by a coiffure. A vertical band of fine relief patterns runs up the center of the protruding brow. Heavy erosion wrought by age and use has endowed this mask with a very specific character, transforming its surface into a study in light and dark textures.
