Ndebele Bride's Apron - South Africa
|
Ndebele beaded aprons (or Jocolo in Ndebele) were made by and worn by women on ceremonial occasions. Various apron styles defined a woman's status as she progressed from girlhood to womanhood. The Jocolo, with its five "fingers", was reserved for use by married women.
This beautiful apron has simple, yet elegant motifs. Of special interest are the 2 small outer flaps. The central flap is "outlined" with blue beads.
The original hide belt and copper "cholwane" are intact. The row of copper ringlets represent both the history of the wealth of the Ndebele (being once copper miners), and the actual wealth and is why sometimes women cut off the copper rings before allowing a mapoto or jocolo to be purchased. It would then be saved, or reused on another object.
A very fine and early example in good condition.
