Boa Sickle - D. R. Congo

Elegance and painstaking craftsmanship mark this Boa sickle, which stands like an alert snake, poised, rigid yet fluid. The warmth of the handle against the cool steel grey of the blade create a pleasing contrast for the eye, but what compels the viewer most at close range is the astonishing detail of the fuller work, marvelously tracing the length of the blade in ranks and flanking a central channel of lovely and varied incised motifs.

This sickle was exhibited in Life Force at the Anvil, University of North Carolina, Asheville, 1998.
