Harpoon Head – Late Old Bering Sea III to Early Punuk, St Lawrence Island, Alaska

This fine harpoon head shows a streamlined, aerodynamic silhouette and an overall form reminiscent of the head of a bird or whale. It is decorated with a relatively spare composition of lightly incised linework and circle-and-dot motifs which, conspiring with the planes and outlines of the surface, suggest a variety of bird-like faces.

Animals portrayed in harpoon heads may depict the hunter’s intended quarry, an animal with specific meaning to an individual hunter, or a creature known to be a swift and cunning predator. All of these have spiritual and metaphysical significance, invoking spirit-helpers who support and empower the hunt. Though deeply associated with harpoons, these designs are found carved on a wide variety of hunting gear, including float-boards, boat hooks, and weapon storage boxes.
