MSOBOMVU

Born in Mkhondo, Mpumalanga, in 1964, Nicholas Sithole began working with clay as a child, inspired by his maternal grandmother. For nearly three decades, he produced vessels for other potters before establishing his own artistic identity in 2007. Encouraged by ceramic artist Magdalene Odundo, Sithole developed a distinctive sculptural language combining traditional Zulu ceramic knowledge with bold contemporary invention.

Known for his exacting standards, he destroys works that fail to meet his expectations, making surviving examples particularly valued. His ceramics are represented in the Pretoria Art Museum, the Nelson Mandela Museum and private collections in South Africa and the United States.
