One of the earliest tools of hunting and defense among the aboriginal peoples of Australia, slender clubs of this type were versatile weapons that could be used at close quarters or thrown from a distance to equally deadly effect. This group of six clubs (one is not pictured) – some with smoothly rounded surfaces, others exhibiting a lovely, faceted appearance – displays the wide range of subtle variation with which these weapons were carved. The tapering shafts of two of these clubs have been scored to afford a better grip.

The clubs in this group range in length from 18" to 31". All in good condition, 1/2 inch of tip missing on club second from left.
