Suku Helmet Mask - D.R. Congo

Dark patination and pigmentation lend an immediate visual appeal to this powerful Suku helmet mask. Its facial features – which project a remarkably sensitive, introspective air – are dominated by a high brow, pronounced cheekbones, wide cheeks, and a densely structured coiffure crowned with a split crest. The curved sweep of the cheekbones framing the eyes is particularly dramatic in this portrait, creating strong shadows and a robust sense of physicality. Projecting just below closed lips is a pointed chin, which curves out and away from the lower edge of the helmet.
