ZULU VESSEL

Artist: Thandiwe Magwaza
Jamiesons Drift, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa
‍
Thandiwe Magwaza belongs to the distinguished Magwaza family of potters from KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Trained by her mother-in-law, Nginemibile MaShezi Magwaza, she is celebrated for her mastery of qhubuza, a demanding technique in which clay is pressed outward from the vessel's interior to create intricate raised patterns. Her elegantly proportioned pots, characterized by broad shoulders and tapering bases, combine technical precision with inventive geometric decoration. Her work has been exhibited internationally and is represented in the North Carolina Museum of Art and Die Neue Sammlung, Munich.
